  • KS2 children prepare for the 'Poetry By Heart' competition (13th February 2020)

    Tue 28 Jan 2020

This year, children in KS2 (year 3 - 6) have the opportunity to enter a national poetry competition run by Poetry By Heart!

The competition heats will be run by year groups in the next few weeks, and the finals will be held on Thursday 13th February 2020, at 13.45pm.

All you have to do to enter is:

    1. Choose a poem you love

    2. Learn it by heart

    3. Perform it in school

    4. Enter the key stage 2 national competition

It’s about helping all pupils choose one special poem to learn from the Poetry By Heart collections. These collections offer children a diverse and enticing mixture of poems, classic and contemporary, surprising and familiar, that are all perfect for speaking aloud. Some are by famous poets of the past such as William Wordsworth, Emily Dickinson and Robert Louis Stevenson; others are by some of the best living poets who write for children today such as Jackie Kay, Philip Gross and Rachel Rooney.

The collections include a wide variety of times, styles and voices from the UK and the wider world and they have been chosen to give everyone a chance to find their own special poem.

    Good luck KS2!

  • Student Council appoints new Eco Council members!

    Fri 24 Jan 2020

At Medway, we are committed to empowering our pupils to become conscious and active global citizens.

That's why we tasked our Student Council with recruiting a new Eco Council who will follow the Eco Schools programme to raise environmental awareness, improve the school environment and engage the wider local community. The aims of the eco council are to empower the whole school community to be more eco conscious, develop strategies for Medway pupils to reduce their environmental impact and to engage with the local community.

    Their role includes:

    • Continually collaborating and communicating with staff, pupils and the community to create new green initiatives
    • Discussing how we can reduce waste in/around our school?
    • Planning/monitoring how we can reduce energy consumption around the school.
    • Checking to see if unnecessary lights are switched off to reduce energy waste
    • Ensuring that recycling bins are set up and emptied on a regular basis.
    • Making sure that only recyclable material is put into 'green' bins.
    • Making sure that classrooms and corridors are litter free.

  • Year 4 are recognised by 'Classics for All' for their achievements in Classics

Fri 24 Jan 2020 Miss Hartley

The Olympus Challenge is run by Classics for All and has been designed to recognise the work of students who are studying classics on an extra-curricular basis or as a non-examined curriculum subject.

In Autumn 2, our year 4 children studied a wide range of subjects within our topic - Ancient Greece - and applied for accreditation with Classics for All.

On January 24th 2020, we were pleased to present the children with their certificates, endorsed by a number of university and further education partners.

To complete the challenge, the children had to complete 3 of the following modules (of which we completed 4!):

A: at least one term studying a cultural or historical topic related to classics (Ancient Greeks)

B: at least one term studying classical literature (The Iliad)

C: at least one term studying Latin or Greek

D: a creative response (e.g. film, drama, art, creative writing) to a classical topic (Papier Mache Greek pots and The Iliad Dance Performance)

E: a study visit to a museum, classical site, theatre etc. which culminates in a presentation or debate on a topic related to the classical world (Trip to the British Museum to see Troy: Myth and Reality)

    Well done year 4!
