More Able Excel at Moat

On Thursday the 8th and Thursday the 15th of October two teams of More Able Learners attended the “If you think you’re smart enough” competition at Moat Community College in Leicester. We had a Key Stage One team from Year 2 and a Key Stage Two team from years 5 and 6. Each Team consisted of 6 children who excel in Maths and Literacy from across their year groups.

In both competitions that day started with a talk about being a hero and using our brain power as a super power. Both teams very bravely mixed with children from the other competing schools in a warm up activity and demonstrated their good sportsmanship by getting to know their competitors. They then worked as a team to solve 3 difficult challenges that tested their general knowledge, maths and science knowledge. Tasks included: building the tallest tower with limited materials (Picture on the right); making a device to stop an egg from smashing when dropped from 2 meters high (Picture on the left); and also using their general knowledge of Leicester to identify locations on a map.

In the afternoon, Team Medway took part in a spelling competition and a maths competition. They cheered on their team mates and between them answered some very challenging questions. The day ended with a presentation about what they enjoyed the most. Each student took home a certificate for their participation and a lanyard to remind them of their achievements. A big well done to both teams for showing outstanding team work and a very positive attitude throughout the competition.
