Safeguarding
Safeguarding Statement
Safeguarding is defined as protecting children from maltreatment, preventing impairment of health and/or development, ensuring that children grow up in the provision of safe and effective care and taking action to enable all children to have the best life chances.
Child protection is part of the safeguarding process. It focuses on protecting individual children who are identified as suffering or at risk of significant harm. This includes child protection procedures, which detail how to respond to concerns about a child.
Medway is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
This means that we have a Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy and procedures in place, which are adhered to by all staff (including supply staff, volunteers and governors), who must ensure they are aware of these procedures. (Parents and carers are welcome and encouraged to read the policy.)
The school's Safeguarding policy can be found here
The school will:
- Recognise that the protection and welfare of children is of paramount importance, regardless of all other considerations;
- Fully comply with its statutory obligations under the Children First Act 2015 and other relevant legislation relating to the protection and welfare of children;
- Fully cooperate with the relevant statutory authorities in relation to child protection and welfare matters;
- Adopt safe practices to minimise the possibility of harm or accidents happening to children and protect workers from the necessity to take unnecessary risks that may leave them open to accusations of abuse or neglect.
- Develop a practice of openness with parents and encourage parental involvement in the education of their children; and
- Fully respect confidentiality requirements in dealing with child protection matters.
The school will also adhere to the above principles in relation to any adult pupil with a special vulnerability.
Sometimes we may need to share information and work in partnership with other agencies when there are concerns about a child’s welfare. We will ensure that our concerns about our pupils are discussed with their parents/carers unless we have reason to believe that doing so would be contrary to the child’s welfare.
Our Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) is:
Mr Steven Williams (Headteacher)
Our Deputy Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs) are:
Mrs Sarah Niner (Deputy Head)
Ms Sian Elton (Assistant Head)
Mrs Paulette Pemberton (Pastoral Team)
Mr Martyn Atkinson (Pastoral Team and Attendance Officer)
Our Safeguarding governor is
Mr Michael Berriman
If you are concerned about a child’s welfare, please record your concern, any observations or conversations you hear, and report it to one of the DSLs as soon as possible, preferably the same day.
Do NOT conduct your own investigation.
If your concerns relate to the actions or behaviour of a member of staff (which could suggest that s/he is unsuitable to work with children), then you should report this to one of the DSLs in confidence, who will refer the matter to the Head teacher (or the Chair of Governors if the concern relates to the Head teacher) – who will consider what action to take.
